The Social Security Appeals Tribunal (SSAT) is an independent statutory body established under the Social Security (Administration) Act 1999 for the purpose of reviewing decisions relating to a wide range of social security and child support matters.

Brief description of the role

The Business Manager – Information Technology reports to the National Manager and provides high level assistance, particularly in relation to planning and developing information technology solutions for the SSAT. The Business Manager – Information Technology manages a team of staff that undertake a broad range of IT duties, such as helpdesk support, Lotus Notes administration, managing the desktop and server fleet and undertaking some process re-engineering.

The SSAT Network Operating System is a Novell OES (SUSE/Linux) solution. There are a small number of Windows 2003 servers. The servers in the National Office have been migrated to a VMWare/SAN environment. The SSAT manages the network using in-house resources.

An ability to understand a range of IT concepts is required. The Business Manager – Information Technology will be required to liaise with senior management, members, staff, representatives from other government agencies and contractors regarding information technology issues including the preparation of reports and statistics, correspondence and documentation as required.

Brief description of the role

The Business Manager – Corporate Services Unit reports to the National Manager and provides high level assistance, particularly in relation to strategic and business planning activities. The Business Manager – Corporate Services Unit manages a team of specialist staff and is responsible for managing a broad range of corporate activities including:
    Human Resource Management, Workplace Relations, Personnel and Payroll processing;
    Communication/Public Relations;
    Learning and Development;
    Information Management;
    Executive support; and
    General administrative support services.

The Business Manager – Corporate Services Unit is responsible for liaising and negotiating with State Directors, Business Managers and staff as well as other external stakeholders on behalf of the National Manager and will be required to build effective partnerships and networks.

The Business Manager – Corporate Services Unit will be required to have an in-depth understanding of all aspects of Tribunal Operations.

This position is located in the National Office in Melbourne. Extensive interstate travel will be required.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - VICTORIA, NEW SOUTH WALES, QUEENSLAND and SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Applications are sought from people interested in being appointed as an Assistant Director of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal (SSAT) in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia.

The SSAT is the determinative first tier Tribunal that reviews decisions made by Centrelink in respect of payments administered by Centrelink. The SSAT also has assumed responsibility for reviewing child support decisions of the Child Support Agency (CSA). The SSAT is the only tier of merits review for CSA appeals.

The Assistant Director is a member of the SSAT and is a statutory office holder in accordance with the Social Security (Administration) Act 1999 to assist the Director in such manner as the Director requires and in accordance with the directions and delegations conferred by the Executive Director.

The successful applicant will require a combination of personal attributes, skills and demonstrated experience. They will be able to show high calibre leadership and management skills and a demonstrated ability to develop sound and effective working relationships. An understanding of the principles of administrative review will be combined with a knowledge of, or an ability to gain a knowledge of, social security and child support law. They will have a national focus and an understanding of and a commitment to the corporate responsibilities and accountabilities of the SSAT, be able to manage change and have effective communication skills. Assistant Directors may be required to undertake additional duties and travel as required by the Director.

Remuneration is fixed by the Remuneration Tribunal. The total remuneration package for a full-time Assistant Director will be $160,000 per annum.
